THE SHORT VERSION

  • San Antonio (3-2) hosts Minnesota (4-2) on Saturday, with the Spurs favored by 12.5 points and the ESPN matchup predictor giving Minnesota a 29.4 percent chance.
  • Minnesota is without Anthony Edwards (knee) and Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles), and Rudy Gobert is listed as a game-time decision with a back injury.
  • Victor Wembanyama has matched a career best with nine dunks in each of the last two games, and the Spurs are running inverted pick-and-rolls with him handling the ball.

What the line is saying

San Antonio is 3-2 and eighth in the Western Conference. Minnesota is 4-2 and seventh. The ESPN game page lists the Spurs as 12.5-point favorites, which is a number about availability more than record.

The matchup predictor on the same page gives Minnesota a 29.4 percent chance. That is the market and the model agreeing that this is not a close game on paper.

The reason is the injury report. Minnesota is without its best player and a rotation guard, and its starting center is a game-time decision.

A 12.5-point line in a game between teams with nearly identical records is unusual. It is also what the roster situation says.

A line that big usually means a team is missing more than one player, and Minnesota is. The market's job is to price the roster, and the roster is thin.

Wembanyama's last two games

Victor Wembanyama has matched a career best with nine dunks in each of his last two games, according to the Yahoo preview, and he has been dominating inside.

That is the version of him that changes a defense. A center who dunks nine times in a game forces help to arrive earlier, which opens the perimeter for everyone else.

Minnesota has the personnel to make that harder. The Timberwolves have been one of the league's better defensive teams this season, and they have size to put on him.

Whether Gobert plays is the whole question. Without him, Minnesota's interior defense becomes a different job for a different player.

San Antonio's offense has been at its best when Wembanyama is the screener and the ball reverses into him on the short roll. That is the action Minnesota has to take away first.

How San Antonio is playing

The Spurs have been running a heavy dose of inverted pick-and-rolls, with Wembanyama handling the ball and Stephon Castle setting screens.

That is a deliberate choice: it puts the ball in the hands of the player defenses least want to help off, and it turns Castle into a short roller who can punish the gap.

The Yahoo preview calls Castle's short-roll play one of the season's early surprises, and it is the mechanism behind San Antonio's 3-2 start.

The Spurs also come in off an overtime win against Utah, which is the kind of game that either builds rhythm or drains legs.

Castle's value in this system is that he can catch at the elbow and make a decision. When he is decisive, the Spurs generate a good shot within four seconds of the pick-and-roll.

San Antonio's start has been one of the more interesting small-sample stories in the West: a team with a generational big man and a point guard who is learning how to use him.

Minnesota without Edwards

The Timberwolves have won four of six without a fully healthy Edwards, and their wins have not been close. That is the encouraging part.

The structure has been the reason: LaMelo Ball as a secondary creator, Jaden McDaniels as the connective forward, and a bench that has held leads.

The Yahoo preview frames the Ball acquisition as an attempt to give Minnesota the secondary ballhandler Edwards has never had. Against San Antonio, that role becomes the primary one.

Without Edwards, the Timberwolves need to win the possession battle: rebounds, turnovers and free throws. They cannot win a shooting contest against a team with Wembanyama inside.

Ball's role changes without Edwards. He becomes the primary pick-and-roll handler, which is the role he was brought in to fill in shorter bursts.

Minnesota's defensive numbers without Edwards have held up, which is the part that gives the Timberwolves a chance in a game like this one.

The matchup to watch

The first thing to watch is the paint. If Wembanyama is catching the ball at the rim, San Antonio's offense is simple and efficient.

The second is Minnesota's 3-point volume. Without Edwards, the Timberwolves need to take and make more 3s than usual to compensate.

The third is pace. San Antonio has been comfortable playing in the half court; Minnesota's best chance is to make the game faster and get easy points.

The fourth is the free throw line, where a short-handed team can steal points that the half court does not give it.

San Antonio's defensive question is the perimeter. If the Spurs' guards cannot stay in front, Minnesota's spot-up shooters get the looks the Timberwolves need.

If the Spurs' first option is a midrange jumper rather than a rim attempt, Minnesota will take that trade every time.

What to watch

Three things. First, Gobert's status. A game-time decision on a back injury is the difference between a competitive game and a mismatch.

Second, Wembanyama's touches. If he is catching the ball above the free throw line instead of at the rim, the Spurs are settling.

Third, Minnesota's shooting. A 12.5-point line gives the Timberwolves room to lose and still cover; the question is whether they can score enough to stay in it.

Fourth, the benches. Minnesota's second unit has been a strength; San Antonio's has been a work in progress.

Fifth, the fourth quarter. A short-handed team usually loses the first four minutes of the last period, and that is when this line gets decided.

The spread is large enough that both teams can leave with something: San Antonio with a win, Minnesota with evidence that the roster holds without its star.
