The 76ers sit LeBron James and Joel Embiid for the Charlotte back-to-back

Philadelphia ruled both stars out on Saturday for injury management, the first time this season the Sixers have been without James and Embiid in the same game.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • LeBron James (low back/sciatica) and Joel Embiid (right foot plantar fasciitis) were ruled out for Saturday's game in Charlotte for injury management.
  • It is the first game this season both have missed together, and it comes on Philadelphia's second back-to-back.
  • The Sixers are 5-1 and have been cautious with both veterans, who are expected to sit on back-to-backs this season.

The decision

Philadelphia ruled out both LeBron James and Joel Embiid for Saturday's road game against the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced, and the reason given was injury management rather than a new injury.

James's designation is low back and sciatica. Embiid's is right foot plantar fasciitis. Neither is described as a setback, which is the point of the announcement.

It is the first game this season that the two will miss together. Each had already missed one game for injury management, but never the same one.

The timing is not subtle: this is Philadelphia's second back-to-back of the season, and the Sixers have said they intend to be careful with both players on those nights.

Charlotte is also the second night of a road trip that began with a win in Philadelphia, which makes the choice easier to live with than it would be in a standalone game.

Philadelphia's medical staff has been building toward this since camp. The team has said repeatedly that it will treat consecutive nights as a separate category of game, and Saturday is the first time that policy has removed both stars at once.

Why now

The Sixers are 5-1, and the record is the reason the team can afford this. A 5-1 team can rest two starters on a back-to-back; a 1-5 team has a harder time explaining it.

Embiid has averaged 35.2 minutes through five games, which is above his career high of 34.6 minutes from his 2022-23 MVP season. That is a number the medical staff is watching, not one it wants to extend.

James is in his early forties and playing his first season in Philadelphia. The team has been careful with him on consecutive nights since training camp, and this is the first time the caution has cost both stars at once.

There is a version of this where the decision is purely about load management. There is also a version where the plantar fasciitis is worse than the team is saying. The Sixers are betting on the first, and their record gives them room to be wrong.

What is left on the floor

The rotation without both stars starts with Tyrese Maxey, who has been Philadelphia's best player and who will now be the primary creator for a night.

Anfernee Simons has been the bench scorer, and VJ Edgecombe has been the rookie who keeps showing up in big moments. Both will get more responsibility against Charlotte.

Jaylen Brown, who missed Friday's win over the Knicks with left patellar tendinopathy, was listed as questionable and ultimately upgraded to available, according to the Yahoo report. Jabari Walker (knee) and Tacko Fall (quad) were also upgraded.

Fall has not played a game this season, and Walker has not played since injuring his knee against Milwaukee. Their availability matters more than usual on a night without Embiid.

Charlotte's defense has been generous this season, which helps. The Hornets allow a lot of good looks, and a Philadelphia offense built around Maxey and Simons should be able to find them.

The opponent

Charlotte is 3-3 and short-handed itself: Kon Knueppel (left hamstring strain), Coby White (left calf strain) and Grant Williams (right hamstring strain) are all out.

That makes this a game the Sixers can win with a reduced roster, and it makes the decision easier to defend afterward if they do.

The Hornets have been one of the league's worst offensive teams this week, which is another reason Philadelphia could pick this night to sit both veterans.

None of that changes the underlying math: a road game without two starters is a game the other team is allowed to win.

The bigger picture

Philadelphia built this roster around two stars who need managing. Embiid's history of foot and knee problems is well known; James has been in the league for more than two decades and the team has been explicit about protecting him.

That means the Sixers will treat some games as optional, and the standings will show it. The bet is that a fresher team in April is worth a worse seed in November.

It also puts weight on the supporting cast, which has been the pleasant surprise of the season: Simons off the bench, Edgecombe as a rookie, Maxey as the constant.

The Sixers are 5-1 with one of the strangest rest plans in the league. So far, the plan is winning.

For the Sixers, the experiment is not whether they can win one game in Charlotte. It is whether the plan produces a healthier team in the spring, and nobody will know that for months.

What to watch

Three things. First, whether James or Embiid misses more than a night. The team called this management, and the next injury report will say whether that holds.

Second, Maxey's usage. A night without both stars is a test of whether he can carry an offense for most of the night.

Third, Charlotte's response. A short-handed Hornets team at home against a short-handed Sixers team is the kind of game that decides how a bad week is remembered.
