THE SHORT VERSION

  • Orlando beat Toronto 121-114 in NBA Cup group play, two nights after losing by 30 points at Scotiabank Arena.
  • Wendell Carter Jr. scored 20 and Anthony Black added 17 points and 10 assists as the Magic went 18 of 34 from 3-point range.
  • Scottie Barnes scored a career-high 41 points before fouling out, and Toronto lost for the second time in three games without Kawhi Leonard.

Two nights, two different teams

On Wednesday, Orlando lost by 30 points in Toronto. On Friday, in the same building, the Magic won by seven with a shooting performance that made the first game look like a different season entirely.

The difference was the 3-point line. The Magic shot 10 for 35 from deep on Wednesday; on Friday they went 18 of 34, and Desmond Bane made his first four attempts before finishing 6 for 12.

That is not a tactical reinvention. It is the same offense producing the result it was designed for, which is the most encouraging thing a team can learn about itself in the first week.

Orlando improved to 2-3 with the win, and the Cup group table now has a result in it that nobody would have predicted on Wednesday night.

Orlando's first quarter set the tone: a fast start, four made 3s and a pace Toronto could not slow down. The Raptors spent the rest of the night chasing the game instead of dictating it.

Carter's 20 and Black's floor game

Wendell Carter Jr. scored 20 points, and Anthony Black added 17 points and 10 assists. That is the shape of the Magic's offense when the 3s are falling: the big man eats inside, and the guard finds everyone.

Black's 10 assists matter more than his 17 points. Orlando does not have a traditional high-usage creator, so the ball has to move to generate good shots, and Black was the reason it did.

The Magic also got a physical game from their bench, which is the part that travels when the shooting does not. Friday's win was built on both.

Orlando's offense has been the question all season. One night of 18 threes does not answer it, and it is a start.

Orlando's big man rotation is not the most talented in the league, and it is one of the most physical. Friday that physicality showed up on both ends, and Carter's 20 points were the visible part of it.

Barnes' career night, and the foul trouble

Scottie Barnes scored 41 points and fouled out. He shot 19 for 34, setting career bests in both made baskets and shot attempts, and he had 11 of 24 in the first half alone.

Without Kawhi Leonard, who is sidelined by swelling in his left knee, Barnes has become the primary offensive option. That role produced the best scoring night of his career and a loss.

The fouling out is the part that matters. A player who is carrying that much of the offense cannot afford to be on the bench in the last two minutes, and Barnes was.

Toronto has now lost two of three without Leonard. The margin in those games has been small, and the pattern is not.

Toronto's half-court offense without Leonard runs through Barnes at the elbow, and Orlando's answer was to crowd him and dare the other four to beat them. Most nights that works; Friday it cost 41 points and still won.

The last eight minutes

Orlando led 95-88 through three quarters before Toronto rallied. The Raptors took their first lead since the opening quarter at 102-100 on Immanuel Quickley's 3-pointer with 8:38 remaining.

Anthony Black answered with a 3 at the 6:56 mark, the first points of a 13-4 Orlando run. The Magic never trailed again.

Quickley finished with 17 and Collin Murray-Boyles added 15. Jakob Poeltl had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto, his first double-double of the season.

The finish is why the shooting night mattered. Orlando made the plays in the last four minutes that a team that trusts its offense makes, and Toronto did not.

The last two minutes were free throws and offensive rebounds, which is how a seven-point game stays a seven-point game. Orlando made enough of both to keep Toronto at arm's length.

A chippy game with 40 fouls

The game was physical in a way that went past normal: both teams combined for 40 personal fouls in the first three quarters alone, and there were confrontations throughout.

Bane and RJ Barrett each picked up a technical foul after a brief scuffle near center court in the first quarter. It set a tone that lasted.

Orlando defended physically, and Toronto did not get many of the calls it wanted. The Raptors' frustration was visible, and the free throw line reflected it.

A game like this in October is a useful stress test for a young team. The Magic passed it; the Raptors have something to review.

Orlando's coaching staff will take the win and the technical fouls. A team that has started slowly needs games where it wins ugly, and this was a game won ugly.

What to watch

Three things. First, whether Orlando's 3-point volume holds. The Magic are not going to shoot 18 of 34 every night, and the mechanism matters more than the number.

Second, Barnes as a first option. Friday was the best scoring game of his career and a loss; the next step is making those two facts stop traveling together.

Third, Leonard's knee. Toronto's season is built around him, and the Raptors are 1-2 without him in the last three games.

Fourth, Toronto's schedule. The Raptors play again quickly, and Leonard's knee may decide more about their month than any adjustment they make.
