Hornets host the Wizards on Friday after a loss in Detroit

Hornets coach Charles Lee benched Naz Reid for the second half of a 97-89 loss at Detroit, saying the forward "didn't meet our standards" in the first half.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Charlotte coach Charles Lee kept Naz Reid on the bench for the entire second half of a 97-89 loss at Detroit.
  • Lee said Reid "didn't meet our standards" in the first half and added that he expects him to meet them in the next game.
  • Reid had seven points on 2-of-6 shooting in 13 minutes; Charlotte led 51-44 at halftime and was outscored 53-38 after it.

The halftime decision

Naz Reid did not play in the second half of the Charlotte Hornets' 97-89 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. Hornets coach Charles Lee said the decision was made at halftime.

"Unfortunately, Naz didn't meet our standards in the first half and at halftime we made the decision that he wouldn't play in the second half," Lee said after the game, according to the New York Post. "But I look forward to him meeting those standards come next game."

Reid finished with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting in 13 minutes and had one block. He is in the second season of a five-year, $125 million contract he signed with Minnesota in July 2025, before the Timberwolves traded him to Charlotte in June.

The sequence before halftime

The New York Post described a sequence late in the first half as the visible turning point. With less than five minutes left in the half, Reid appeared confused when Lee tried to communicate play signals, and on the next possession he looked lost on the floor.

A video clip of the exchange circulated on social media after the game. In it, Reid is talking with center Moussa Diabate when Lee steps in and shows two different signals. Reid was pulled shortly afterward and did not return.

Lee did not make the clip part of his explanation. His postgame answer was about standards and a halftime decision, and he said he expected Reid to meet those standards in the next game. The Hornets have not said anything further about discipline or minutes.

What Charlotte lost

The benching changed the game. Charlotte led 51-44 at halftime and was outscored 53-38 in the second half, scoring 38 points across the final two quarters.

Reid is averaging 19.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in five games with the Hornets, and he was the 2024 Sixth Man of the Year. A team that loses that much scoring from its bench has to replace it with somebody, and Charlotte did not.

Grayson Allen, one of the league's better bench scorers, had nine points on 2-of-8 shooting. Dennis Schroder scored 14 points with five assists, and the rest of the second unit produced little. Charlotte also played without Kon Knueppel and Coby White, two rotation players the team expects back.

The minutes that would have gone to Reid went to smaller lineups instead. That put more of the ball in Miller's hands and left Charlotte with fewer options when Detroit switched screens and forced a second scorer to create. The Hornets scored 51 points in the first half and 38 in the second.

Five games into a $125 million deal

Reid arrived in June in the trade that sent LaMelo Ball to Minnesota. Charlotte also received a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three second-round picks in 2029, 2032 and 2033, and first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030.

That deal made him one of the highest-paid players on the roster and one of the few with playoff experience. The Hornets gave up the face of their franchise to get him, which is the context for a benching five games into the season.

Lee said after the game that Reid would return to the rotation. The Hornets play the Washington Wizards on Friday, which gives the team a short turnaround to settle the issue and gives Reid a game to show the standards his coach described.

Miller's 31 and 25 turnovers

Brandon Miller scored 31 points with 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals, his third straight game with 30 or more. He shot well enough to keep Charlotte close, but the Hornets committed 25 turnovers, and those possessions cost them more than Reid's absence did.

The turnover problem is not new. Charlotte ranks 29th in the NBA at 20.2 turnovers per game, ahead of only the Clippers, and it gave the ball away 27 times in its first loss of the season against Atlanta. In a game decided by eight points, 25 empty possessions are enough to cover the margin by themselves.

Detroit turned those mistakes into points and got 30 from Cade Cunningham, who also had seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Paul Reed started in place of the injured Jalen Duren and scored 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, with four rebounds, three steals and a block.

Miller's line is the other half of the story. A 31-point, 12-rebound night from a forward kept Charlotte close in a game its bench could not score in, and it came while the player the team traded for in June watched the second half from the seat next to the coaches.

What comes next

The loss dropped Charlotte to 3-2 and ended a two-game winning streak. The Pistons won without Duren, and our report on Detroit's season opener covers how the Pistons started the year.

Duren's injury is part of a wider run of early-season absences across the league, which our injury roundup tracks.

The Wizards game on Friday is a rematch: the teams played Monday in Charlotte. Our national viewing guide lists where the Hornets' games appear this season. Reid's role in that game will be the thing to watch, and so will whether the second-half minutes go to someone else again.

Five games into the season, Charlotte has already changed the shape of its rotation twice. Friday's game will show whether the halftime decision was a one-game correction or the start of a smaller role for a player the team gave up a lot to acquire.
