Holmgren out 8-10 weeks, and Oklahoma City is down three starters

The Thunder announced Friday that Chet Holmgren had a biological treatment for a small patellar tendon tear and will miss 8-10 weeks, the third OKC starter ruled out for an extended stretch.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Oklahoma City said Chet Holmgren will miss 8-10 weeks after a biological treatment for a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee, with a full recovery expected.
  • Holmgren is the third Thunder starter ruled out for an extended period this week, joining Jalen Williams (fibula, ankle) and Cason Wallace (torn labrum).
  • It is the third significant injury of Holmgren's career since the Thunder drafted him, after a broken foot cost him the 2022-23 season and a fractured pelvis cost him months of 2024-25.

What the Thunder actually announced

Oklahoma City's news release Friday was short and specific. Chet Holmgren will miss 8-to-10 weeks after undergoing what the team called a "biological treatment" for a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee.

The team said it expects a full recovery. That phrase matters as much as the timeline: this is being framed as a repair with a defined window, not as a season-ending problem.

The number attached to it is two months at minimum. For a team that opened the season with championship expectations, that is the difference between managing a roster and rebuilding a rotation.

A patellar tendon tear in a seven-footer is not the same injury as a patellar tendon tear in a guard, and the treatment chosen reflects that. The team's word was biological, not surgical, which is why the window reads as a projection rather than a sentence.

How the diagnosis arrived

Holmgren met with specialists after experiencing mild discomfort in his right knee on Sunday. That was the same day Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace were hurt in a game against the Clippers.

A determination was made to perform the treatment Friday. The team's release described the tear as small, which is the detail that makes an 8-to-10 week window plausible rather than optimistic.

So the Thunder's week is one Sunday and one Friday. On Sunday they lost two starters in a single game. On Friday they learned the extent of a third problem that had been described, until then, only as discomfort.

The week in one line

Williams suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle. He had surgery Wednesday and the team said he will be reevaluated before the end of the regular season.

Wallace suffered a torn labrum. He had surgery Friday in Los Angeles, and the Thunder said he will also be reevaluated before the end of the regular season.

Three of the five starters are now out for an indefinite period. Backup guard Alex Caruso is also nursing a sprained ankle.

That is the whole of it, and it is why Friday's announcement reads less like a single injury update and more like an audit of a roster that was considered the deepest in the league two weeks ago.

The roster was built to withstand one absence at a time. It was not built to withstand three at once, and the difference between those two sentences is the next two months of Oklahoma City's season.

A career that keeps restarting

This is the third significant injury Holmgren has suffered since the Thunder selected him. He missed the entire 2022-23 season after breaking his foot weeks after the draft.

He then missed a few months of the 2024-25 season with a fractured pelvis, returned, and played a key role in Oklahoma City's championship run.

Last season he earned first-team All-Defensive and third-team All-NBA honors while averaging 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks. The production is not the question with him. Availability is.

The pattern is the part that makes this uncomfortable to watch. Each time he has come back, he has come back as a better player, and each time the team has had to rebuild his workload from the ground up.

What two months costs

An 8-to-10 week absence puts Holmgren's return somewhere in late December or January, which means the Thunder will spend the next two months learning what their rotation is without the player who anchors their defense.

The schedule does not pause for that. Oklahoma City has to find minutes at center, protect the rim with different personnel and hope the two players already out for the season-long reevaluation do not define the year before Holmgren comes back.

There is also a competitive cost that the standings will show slowly: every game without three starters is a game in which the margin for error belongs to someone else.

There is a version of this in which the Thunder simply absorb the weeks. They have the depth, they have the coaching, and the schedule has not yet hardened. But depth is a description of a roster, not a guarantee about January, and every rotation decision made now will be re-examined when Holmgren is cleared.

What to watch

Three things are worth tracking. First, the reevaluation dates: Williams and Wallace are both scheduled to be looked at before the end of the regular season, which is a much longer horizon than Holmgren's.

Second, how Oklahoma City covers the center position in the meantime, and whether the answer comes from the roster or from a transaction.

Third, Holmgren himself. A small tear with a full-recovery expectation is the best version of this news. The Thunder have to play two months in a way that makes the best version still matter in January.

Fourth, and least discussed: what the Thunder say about him in four weeks, not eight. The first update after a procedure is usually the one that tells you whether the timeline is holding.
