The ninth pick in 2022 is in the G League with the Texas Legends after being waived by Portland, and he says he would rather stay and prove himself than leave.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Jeremy Sochan had offers from teams in Europe and Australia but told Andscape he would rather wait for another NBA opportunity.
  • Sochan was waived by the Trail Blazers after training camp and was taken first overall in the G League draft by the Texas Legends.
  • He is no longer eligible for a two-way contract because he has four years of NBA service.

The choice he made

Jeremy Sochan had offers from teams in Europe and Australia but he would rather wait for another NBA opportunity, he told Marc J. Spears of Andscape.

That is the whole story in one sentence, and it is a decision rather than an accident. A player with four years of NBA service and a championship ring could have taken a guaranteed role abroad.

Instead he is in the G League with the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ affiliate, after being selected first overall in the G League draft last month.

Sochan hopes to be promoted to the Mavericks’ roster at some point. He is also free to sign with any NBA team, because holding a player’s G League rights is separate from controlling his NBA rights.

Why the route is narrow

Sochan is no longer eligible for a two-way deal since he has four years of NBA service, which removes the most common bridge between the G League and a roster.

That matters for how this ends. A younger player can be signed to a two-way contract and developed for a season; a four-year veteran has to be signed to a standard deal, and those are scarce in November.

So the G League is not a holding pen for him in the usual sense. It is a shop window, and every game is an audition for a roster spot that may not open until January.

He was waived after spending training camp and the preseason on an Exhibit 9 contract with the Trail Blazers, a deal that carries no guarantee and pays a small bonus if the player is cut.

How he got here

Sochan was the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft and spent his first three-and-a-half years with the Spurs, who experimented with his role and used him at point guard and as a small-ball centre.

He had a good rookie season, making the All-Rookie second team and proving to be one of the better perimeter defenders in the league, and he averaged at least 11 points per game in each of his first three seasons.

The fit was always awkward. A forward without a reliable three-point shot is a difficult piece in the modern game, and San Antonio’s roster changed around him once Victor Wembanyama arrived.

He fell out of the rotation in his fourth season, requested a trade and was eventually waived, then signed with the New York Knicks, where he did not play a role but won a championship against his former team.

What he says now

“I will always be pretty prideful about my journey, because it’s very unique,” Sochan said. “It kind of felt weird being a little unemployed, but it is what it is. And I’m going to work, stay ready and do everything I can to prove myself.”

He described the title with New York as a full-circle moment, and the account of the Finals is oddly matter-of-fact: the last game he played, he said, was the final eight seconds.

On being waived by Portland, he said he would not have told you he saw it coming, but that he could understand the reasoning after the way the last couple of years went.

He also said the Knicks had interest in him as a training camp invitee and that he heard from the Clippers, which is the market telling you what it thinks of him: worth a look, not yet worth a roster spot.

The fit problem

The honest analysis of Sochan is that his best season would have been more valuable fifteen years ago. An undersized, defensive forward who rebounds and cannot shoot is a rotation player in a slower era and a puzzle now.

That is not a character flaw and it is not a coaching failure. It is a market judgment about a skill set, and the market has been consistent about it across three teams.

The argument for him is that defence, rebounding and screening travel. A contender with shooting at the other four positions can use a player who guards the best opposing wing and does not need touches.

The injury attrition across the league is the simplest route back: rosters open when bodies fall, and a ready veteran is easier to sign than a project.

What comes next

The Legends are the Mavericks’ affiliate, which is either an opportunity or a locked door depending on how Dallas’s season goes. The Mavericks are a team with their own rotation questions and no obvious reason to add a forward who cannot shoot.

Every other NBA team can sign him, and the ones with injuries are the ones that will look. That is how these stories usually end: a ten-day contract in January, then a decision.

If it does not happen, the overseas offers will still be there in the summer, and he will have lost a year of earning to prove a point.

That is why the decision is worth recording. Choosing the G League over Europe is a bet on a league that is watching rather than a bet on a paycheque, and most players in his position do not make it.
