THE SHORT VERSION

  • Payton Pritchard scored 30 points and Boston beat Chicago 125-111 in its NBA Cup group-play opener.
  • The Celtics led by 32 points with 1:52 left in the first half and scored 56 points in the paint.
  • Boston has won four straight games and sits at 4-1, while the Bulls have lost four in a row.

The half that decided it

Boston did not need a fourth quarter. The Celtics pushed the lead to 32 points with 1:52 left in the first half, and by the time Chicago cut into it, Boston's starters were already done for the night.

That is the shape of a professional blowout: the game ends before the bench empties, and the final score becomes a formality rather than a description.

Chicago's run came in the fourth quarter against reserves. It cut the margin roughly in half, which is the only reason the final score reads 125-111 instead of something worse.

The first half is the part that matters. Boston scored 56 points in the paint in this game, and most of those came before the break.

Boston's offense in that half was not complicated: paint touches first, kick-outs second, and a guard who kept making the second shot after the first one was contested.

Pritchard's night, and the pattern

Payton Pritchard finished with 30 points, including 20 in the first half. It was the second time in a week he has hurt Chicago badly, after scoring 28 points in 22 minutes in an earlier Boston win over the Bulls.

That is a specific kind of value: a bench guard who becomes a starter-level scorer in the right matchup, and who has now done it twice against the same opponent.

It also says something about how Boston is built. The Celtics can absorb a cold night from a starter because the fourth guard on the roster is capable of a 30-point game.

Pritchard's minutes are not guaranteed, and his production is not incidental. The two facts are compatible, and Boston is better for it.

He is also the kind of player whose value depends on the matchup, and Chicago has now given him two good ones in a week. That is not a knock on him; it is how bench scoring works in the NBA.

The rest of the offense

Paul George finished with 18 points and eight assists, which is the line of a player who is comfortable being the second option on a night when the ball is moving.

Boston has now won four consecutive games, and the offense has looked different in each of them. That is what depth buys: a team can win a different way on Tuesday and Sunday.

The Celtics are 4-1, and the one loss came in a game they were still figuring out their rotation. The schedule has not been easy, and the record is what it is.

Chicago, meanwhile, has lost four straight. Caleb Wilson had 23 points, and the Bulls' problem was not scoring in the second half; it was the first.

George's eight assists are the number worth keeping. A forward who moves the ball on a night when he is not the primary scorer is what makes a 30-point bench game possible.

The group, and the format

This was the first game of NBA Cup group play for both teams. Boston and Chicago are in East Group C with the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards.

Group play lasts four games, with each team playing the others once, before the knockout rounds. Point differential is the tiebreaker after head-to-head results, which is why the margin in a game like this is not noise.

The margin Boston built is a useful number in a group that includes three teams with losing records. It is not decisive, and it is not nothing.

The deficit Chicago carries is the other side of the same ledger. In a four-game group, one blowout can be the difference between advancing and going home.

The margin in the standings is already part of the story in East Group C, where three teams will need tiebreakers to separate themselves.

What Chicago takes from it

There is no version of this game where the Bulls played well and lost. They were down 32 before halftime and spent the second half playing against reserves.

The one encouraging detail is that they did not quit. The fourth-quarter run came from bench players who had nothing to lose, and it made the score respectable.

Respectable scores do not carry into the standings. Chicago is 0-? in Cup play after one game, and the schedule does not get easier.

For a team that has lost four straight, the next game is the one that matters. This one is a data point about how far the gap is.

Chicago's first half was the problem in a plain way: 32 points down before the break, and no answer for Boston's paint touches. The fourth quarter does not change that.

What to watch

Three things. First, whether Pritchard's role grows. A 30-point game off the bench is hard to keep on the bench, and Boston's rotation will be tested by that.

Second, the Celtics' defensive numbers. A 125-point night is nice, and the games that decide a season are the ones where the offense is average.

Third, Chicago's response. Four straight losses in October is a slow start; five would start a different conversation.

Fourth, the Bulls' rotation. If the starters are going to be pulled before the fourth quarter, the development minutes need to be worth something.
