Kiah Stokes wore the analytics that wrote her team off to the parade

The four-time champion printed ESPN’s preseason odds on a shirt for the Valkyries parade, and the network answered with a chart giving Golden State a hundred percent chance.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Kiah Stokes wore a shirt printing ESPN’s preseason title odds, which did not include the Valkyries, during Golden State’s championship parade.
  • ESPN responded by posting a chart giving the Valkyries 100 percent odds and noting it had made them favourites from August 10.
  • Stokes averaged 5.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in the regular season and was named to the All-Defensive second team.

The shirt at the parade

During the Valkyries’ championship parade on Wednesday, Kiah Stokes showed up wearing a shirt that had a printout of ESPN’s analytics.

The printout was a graphic from July 5 showing the five teams with the best chances to win the 2026 title. Golden State was not among them.

It is the kind of joke that only works if the person wearing it has the standing to make it. Stokes is a four-time WNBA champion, and this ring was her fourth.

She wore it on a float in front of the city that had spent two seasons filling her building, which is the part that turned a screenshot into a parade moment.

How ESPN answered

ESPN ultimately responded to Kiah Stokes’ shirt by jokingly creating a new analytics chart showing the Valkyries as having 100 percent odds at winning the WNBA championship.

They also clarified that they had given the Valkyries the top odds at winning it all as of August 10, which is a fair correction: models update, and the July graphic was a snapshot.

That exchange is the healthiest version of the analytics argument. The network took the joke, answered in kind, and both sides got the point across without anyone pretending the model was a prediction of the result.

It also says something about where the league is. A defender’s T-shirt becomes a national story because the audience for the WNBA is now large enough to care about a joke at a parade.

What she actually did

Jokes aside, Stokes was a factor in the title run. She signed as a free agent in the offseason in what was essentially an under-the-radar move, and ended up as a primary catalyst for a championship.

During the regular season Stokes appeared in 43 of 44 games at a little over 22 minutes per game, averaging 3.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 blocked shots.

She shot 43.4 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three-point line, which is the honest description of a centre whose value is on the other end.

In the playoffs, she averaged 4.2 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 2.4 blocked shots while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

The defensive anchor

The former UConn standout was selected to the All-Defensive second team for her role on the best defensive team in the WNBA.

That is the piece the analytics chart could not price. A rim protector who does not need the ball changes how guards defend the point of attack, because they can be more aggressive knowing there is help behind them.

The Valkyries won a title without an All-WNBA player, and Stokes is the clearest example of how: a specialist doing a specific job at a high level inside a system that needed exactly that.

Golden State signed her to a two-year guaranteed contract last offseason, which now looks like one of the better value deals in the league.

Why the joke landed

The chart was about a team that had never played a game, and the season that followed made it look silly. That is why the shirt worked: the team did the arguing on the floor.

Golden State beat Atlanta in the first Game 7 in WNBA history, and the series itself is now the reference point for anyone who wants to argue with a model.

The league’s growth is part of the story too. A championship parade with a viral shirt is a cultural event, and the WNBA has been producing more of them each season.

None of it changes the analytics. It changes how people read them, which is a different and more useful thing.

What it means now

Stokes is under contract for at least one more season, so the interior defence that won this title is scheduled to return.

The roster around her will not be identical, and the audience that watched the parade will expect another run.

For the player, the shirt is a small thing that will follow her, in the way that a good line follows an athlete for years. It helps that she can point at the ring.

For the network, the reply was the right one: correct the record, accept the joke, move on. For everyone else, the lesson is the usual one about preseason odds and what a team does with them.

It is also a reminder of how fast a market narrative can invert. The same models that left Golden State out in July had them at the top by August, and by November the argument was settled on the floor rather than in a spreadsheet.

Stokes is 32 and has now won in two cities, so the shirt reads less like a grudge than a professional noting that the projections missed something the players could see in practice.

Whether the Valkyries can do it again is a separate question, and the answer will come from the same place: the defensive end, where she does her work and where the franchise has built its identity.
