Nuggets visit Pelicans with Jokic one triple-double short of 200

Denver led from the first quarter. The milestone came with a stat line that two published versions describe differently.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Jokic recorded his 200th career regular-season triple-double in Denver's 104-91 win at New Orleans.
  • The Associated Press credited him with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists; NBA.com's recap text gave 10 rebounds and 13 assists.
  • He needs 10 more regular-season triple-doubles to pass Russell Westbrook's record of 209.

The 200th triple-double

Nikola Jokic recorded his 200th career regular-season triple-double on Wednesday night in New Orleans. He is the second player in NBA history to reach 200, after Russell Westbrook. Denver beat the Pelicans 104-91 and led for the entire game. NBA.com reported the milestone within minutes of the final buzzer and noted that Jokic reached it in his 12th NBA season.

The published stat lines do not agree. The Associated Press box score, republished by theScore, credits Jokic with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. NBA.com's recap text gives 21 points with 10 rebounds and 13 assists, while a caption on the same page reads 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. The milestone is not in dispute; the split of rebounds and assists is. This article uses the AP figures and treats the caption as an error on the page. NBA.com also listed a plus-minus of plus-17 for Jokic, the best on the team.

A triple-double requires double digits in three statistical categories, usually points, rebounds and assists. Two hundred of them is a career measure rather than a single-season one. Jokic passed Oscar Robertson on the career list earlier in his career, according to NBA.com, which left Westbrook as the only player ahead of him before Wednesday.

Westbrook is still 10 ahead

Westbrook holds the record at 209, set across 18 NBA seasons. He retired after last season. Jokic needs 10 more regular-season triple-doubles to pass him.

Ten is a small number next to 209 and a large number inside an 82-game season. It asks for the same conditions that produced the first 200: a role that keeps the ball in his hands, enough minutes, and teammates who convert the passes. Jokic reached 200 in his 12th season; Westbrook needed 18 to reach 209. The season also brings rest days and back-to-backs, and any counting stat slows when a player sits.

The two careers run at different speeds, but the record counts only regular-season games, so the comparison sits on one basis. Westbrook stopped at 209 when he retired; Jokic is 10 behind with the season in its second week.

The game never turned

Denver led 37-18 after the first quarter and shot 62% from the field in the period. Marvin Bagley's runner made it 44-22 with about nine minutes left in the second quarter, Denver's largest lead. The Nuggets swept the two-game, home-and-home series with New Orleans; on Saturday in Denver they had erased a 23-point deficit to win.

New Orleans cut into the lead in the fourth. Zion Williamson scored 25 points and hit a three that brought the Pelicans within 88-83. Jamal Murray answered with a three and a driving finger roll, and the lead returned to 10. Murray finished with 23 points; Aaron Gordon had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Murray made his first three shots of the night, all from beyond the arc.

Never trailing changes how the night reads. The Nuggets did not need a late comeback, so the fourth quarter was about holding a lead rather than building one, and Jokic's minutes came inside a comfortable margin. That is a different setting from Saturday, when the same teams played a close game into the final possession.

Denver used nine players

Denver played without Cam Johnson (ankle) and Alpha Diallo (sprained wrist), and remained without Julian Strawther and Spencer Jones. The Nuggets used nine players. Christian Braun scored 15 points and Trevon Brazile added 11.

A short rotation changes what a triple-double looks like. With fewer scoring options on the floor, more possessions run through Jokic's passing, and the assist count partly measures who was available to finish. Rebounds depend less on teammates, though they still track minutes and how many shots were missed.

That does not make 200 easier or harder. It explains why the assist and rebound totals can move by three or four from game to game without any change in approach, and why a single line from one night is a weak guide to the next.

New Orleans is 0-4

The Pelicans are 0-4 under first-year coach Jamahl Mosley. Derik Queen had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Jeremiah Fears scored 11. New Orleans shot 7-for-30 from three-point range, 23.3%.

The shooting number explains most of the margin. A team that misses 23 of 30 threes has to win inside the arc and at the free-throw line, and New Orleans did not close a 22-point gap that way. Long misses also tend to end possessions with defensive rebounds, and Denver's lead grew in those possessions.

Four games is a small sample for a team with a new coach and a young rotation. The schedule does not pause: the Pelicans host Sacramento on Thursday, and the games after that will show whether the shooting improves or the losses accumulate. Our earlier Pelicans report covers the same stretch of the schedule.

What 200 does and does not settle

A triple-double record is a counting stat. It rewards availability, role and time on the floor as much as skill. It also depends on teammates converting passes, which is why the same player can post 10 assists one night and 13 the next without changing his approach.

Denver visits Phoenix on Friday for an NBA Cup group-stage opener. That game matters more to the standings than the milestone does. The Pelicans host Sacramento the night before, so the two teams arrive at their next games with different rest and different travel. The Cup opener is one of the dates our NBA Cup schedule explainer sets out, and the 2026-27 national viewing guide lists where those games appear.

The record will move when Jokic next posts a triple-double, and the count will be checked again then. The gap to Westbrook is small enough that a strong month could close it, and large enough that an injury or a rest day would slow it.

The page that reported the milestone also carried three different stat lines in one afternoon. Anyone repeating the total should start with the box score, then check whether the league's own page has been corrected.
